The great avocado shortage of 2005 in New Zealand made headlines as it sent the price of sushi sky-high. It highlights two things about NZ: Firstly, we love a first world problem headline down under and secondly, sushi, specifically salmon and avocado sushi is pretty much a local staple.
London is catching up, we have the chain stores of Itsu and Wasabi who do really well to bring sushi to the masses and so when Youmesushi got in touch to ask if I’d like to review their selections, I eagerly said yes.
Their Marylebone store is a little far from my current abode, so I decided to order from their cold menu, although I did have my eye on the Black cod over rice as a hot food Japanese food favourite of mine.
We’ve gone for the 36 piece Sushi box, comprising 10 pieces of salmon nigiri, 6 pieces of salmon & avocado inside out rolls, 6 pieces of california roll, 6 pieces of salmon maki roll and 8 pieces of salmon sashimi – enough to feed the two of us with plenty to spare.
Everything was wonderfully fresh and no worse the wear for its drive across town. The fish was at exactly the right temperature, meaty and not too oily or greasy. The sushi rolls were tightly rolled and neatly presented and full of meaty filling. However, there wasn’t enough condiments fit for the enormous platter – we had enough remaining to have for lunch the following day and there wasn’t enough wasabi, ginger or soya sauce to dip into.
At £30, I think the full takeaway was quite good value, it offered up an awful lot of sushi for that amount of money. I’ve spent more on mediocre pizza before so I’d be happy to put my own cash towards a delivery like this in the future!
Youmesushi has a few stores around London – Marylebone, Gray’s Inn, Brent Cross, Westfield and Tottenham Court Road. I ordered from the Marylebone store, which can be found at 156 Marylebone Rd, London, NW1 5PN
Disclosure: My sushi order was complimentary for the purposes of the review. As always, opinions are my own.
